<image:title>Basque blog - Why Ben moved to The Basque Country</image:title>
<image:caption>Secondly, I was very privileged to grow up in an English family amongst the multicultural melee of central London, deeply entwined with my Caribbean neighbours, my Indian study buddies and my Far Eastern team mates. Following a career in environmental conservation also allowed me to work and travel all over the world, from Argentina to Guyana to Uganda to Nepal to Fiji. This is a marvellous heritage to have as I can connect with people from all sorts of different backgrounds, but there is a significant drawback. What is my culture? I’ve been involved and assimilated into so many that my own sense of cultural identity is quite vague, which I feel as a slight loss.</image:caption>

<image:title>Basque blog - Why Ben moved to The Basque Country</image:title>
<image:caption>The Basque Country, El Pais Vasco’ or Euskal Herria, is an incredible fusion of wilderness and fine culture; a place to find deep forest clad mountainsides falling into wild oceans or to find Michelin-star chefs serving extraordinary local cuisine. It’s why, of all the places my unexpectedly nomadic life has taken me, I’ve decided to settle here. As a person, I am equally happy living in the Peruvian rainforest or dressing up for the Balshoi Ballet, but I need both to keep my body, mind and spirit happy. The Basque Country scratches all these itches.</image:caption>

<image:title>top tips - Best Hotels Bilbao - 2. Nice apartments outside central Bilbao</image:title>
<image:caption>($$ moderate) An apartment in the centre is great. But there is so much to see in the surrounding area that a beautiful apartment nearby is also highly recommended. Discover not only Bilbao, but also the charming seaside villages in the area. For example, in the car-free part of Getxo, you’ll find this lovely apartment. On the outskirts of Bilbao, there’s the Bizi apartment, where parking your car is also easy. Ideal.</image:caption>

<image:title>top tips - Camper van spots in San Sebastian - 5. Orio-Igeldo Motorhome Park</image:title>
<image:caption>location (out of town, Igeldo) Another rural park-up only 15 mins out of San Sebastian. Up on the top of the ridge, it has spectacular sea views from the adjacent land, loads of hiking trails nearby and a fantastic local restaurant within walking distance. The recreational area has toilets, BBQ facilities and a drinking fountain, which can be popular with locals at the weekends. The parking spots are actually on the road so you may get the occasional car passing in the night.</image:caption>

<image:title>top tips - Camper van spots in San Sebastian - 3. The back streets of Ibaeta</image:title>
<image:caption>location (Arturo Campion Kalea) Unrestricted street parking, you can find a quiet spot among the cul-de-sacs and the yet undeveloped streets where locals leave their motorhomes. Again, it’s safe and very quiet but because it is street parking, be discrete after dark if you’ve parked on a thoroughfare as if the police happen to pass and see your lights on, they might get you to move on. I leave my converted mini-bus there long term nowadays.</image:caption>

<image:title>top tips - Camper van spots in San Sebastian - 2. The Ilunbe Stadium Park</image:title>
<image:caption>location (Anoeta) Quite a tricky place to find with quite an industrial feel but very safe (again, ignore the false Park4Night warnings) and reasonably quiet, located in the grounds of the Ilunbe Stadium. There’s a designated motorhome area which is free (no facilities) and you can walk down past the Real Sociedad Stadium and along the river into town, with bars and supermarkets all very nearby. There’s a 72 hour limit which is never enforced (as far as I’ve experienced, I used to keep my big converted bus there) but be mindful of restricted access during Real Sociedad games - you are at liberty to stay parked-up but won’t be able to drive in during the specified match day times (check the signage) when the larger car park is used for visiting coaches.</image:caption>

<image:title>top tips - Camper van spots in San Sebastian - As an ex-vanlifer, I know a few things about what makes a good park-up spot, though this is often quite subjective. Here are my top 5 spots in and around San Sebastian where you can spend the night in relative peace and be within walking/biking distance or a short drive back into the centre of town.</image:title>
<image:caption>City parking note: finding a space to park in the city is difficult, but if you do find a spot, here are the meanings of the road markings: white = unrestricted; white with ‘B’ and ‘R’ markings = residents parking only; blue and green dashes = pay at the machine during restricted hours (which tend to be 09.00-13.30 and 15.30 - 20.00 on weekdays, and 09.00-13.30 only on Saturdays.). Be careful of the Low emissions Zone too.</image:caption>

<image:title>top tips - Camper van spots in San Sebastian - 1. The Motorhome Pay & Display</image:title>
<image:caption>location (Antiguo) The spot of choice for most motorhomers, it’s quiet, cheap and within walking distance of La Concha and the Old Town. It’s got a 3 day limit and is often pretty busy so can be difficult to find a spot. It’s very safe (don’t heed some of the false reviews on Park4Night) and you can wake up to birdsong. There’s also a grey-water drain and a water point, as well as cafes etc. nearby.</image:caption>
</image:image>

<image:title>top tips - Camper van spots in San Sebastian - 4. Listorreta Motorhome Park</image:title>
<image:caption>location (out of town, Hernani) A glorious, free, rural park-up about 20 mins out of town, surrounded by forest and beautiful walks - check out the caves nearby which were inhabited by early hominids. There are toilet and BBQ facilities, as well as a grey-water drain, water point and bin facilities. Can be quite popular with families and other campers during weekends but there’s lots of space so you’ll always find a spot.</image:caption>

<image:title>top tips - Short walks around San Sebastian - This is a collection of my favourite walks in and around the Donostia-San Sebastian area. I regularly need to take a break from the hustle and bustle of the (albeit tranquil) city; these are the places I retreat to, when I have a moment. There’s nothing particularly demanding in this list and all of these walks are ideal for taking yourself, your family or your dog out for a gentle amble. They are all anywhere between 30 mins and 1hr long in duration.</image:title>

<image:title>top tips - Short walks around San Sebastian - 4. The Pasaia Ria</image:title>
<image:caption>location (in Pasaia, ‘within’ San Sebastian) 40 mins, gentle stroll then steep steps. Part coastal promenade, part hill climb, this starts with sights across the sound of the historical fishing village of Pasaia Donibane and finishes with a spectacular view of the natural harbour entrance with the castle-like Faro de la Plata lighthouse overlooking everything. An out-and-back walk starting on the dockside at the Torreko Plaza in Pasaia, you stroll along the ‘malecon’, past the Basque rowing teams, past the view of Victor Hugo’s old residence, past the historical shipyard of Albaola, then up the steps to behold the magnificent entrance to this flooded river valley (known as a ‘ria’).</image:caption>

<image:title>top tips - Short walks around San Sebastian - 2. Around Kukuarri Ridge</image:title>
<image:caption>location (15 mins drive along the coast) 1hr moderate hike, flat but with one steep hill. Absolutely spectacular sea views from the coastal ridgeline that runs between San Sebastian and Orio, this circular hike starts and finishes in the Orio-Igeldo picnic area, joining the Camino de Santiago for a short while. Mixed forests of chesnut, rowan, hazel and pine provide a beautiful natural habitat to immerse yourself in while gazing down the slopes into the distant ocean or looking out over the distant rugged coastline. Consult the info board in the corner of the picnic area for the route.</image:caption>

<image:title>top tips - Short walks around San Sebastian - 3. Aizpitarte Caves</image:title>
<image:caption>location (20 mins drive south into the hills) 30 mins easy hike, rocky trail. Located in old growth ash forest, it’s hard to imagine you are so close to the city when you arrive here. Park at the nearby Listorreta Park (which has facilities) and follow the trail up the valley towards the caves. The wildlife is amazing with birds of all varieties, deer, wild boar and, incredibly, a big population of Pyrenean fire salamanders (who come out at dusk). But the main feature is the caves which, although mostly closed off, you can still stand in the entrances and feel the story of our ancestors; these were used by Neandertals and early Homo Sapiens too. There’s a lovely glade just upstream from the caves which is a great spot for a picnic.</image:caption>

<image:title>top tips - Short walks around San Sebastian - 1. Promenade around Mt Urgull</image:title>
<image:caption>location (in San Sebastian itself) 35 mins gentle stroll, flat. I didn’t find out about this gem until I’d been here a few years… A marvellous circular walk along Pasealeku Berria all the way around Mount Urgull , the main hilltop above the Old Town, with the massive statue of Christ. You can either start on the west bank of the river or at the Aquarium beyond the marina. It’s a proper sunset spot with plenty of benches and viewing platforms, a bike lane which lends itself to skating as well, and access up Mt Urgull too, if you want to get a bit higher. On rough days it’s probably the best place in the region to safely experience the might of the ocean.</image:caption>

<image:title>top tips - Short walks around San Sebastian - 5. The two beach city walk</image:title>
<image:caption>location (in San Sebastian) 1hr brisk walking, flat. Not exactly escaping the city, but a proper city hike if you’re up for it. Starting at the Comb of the Wind sculpture at the west end of the Ondarreta beach, you track the sand all the way around the bay of La Concha, drinking up the sophisticated beach vibes and elegant pedestrian traffic. Once you reach the old town hall (which you can’t miss, it’s the most ornate building around, just before the port), you cut through under the old town, crossing the river under the watchful eye of the remarkable Kursaal Concert Hall. Hugging the coast, you then hit La Zurriola beach where the surfers and volleyball players alike gather in their hoards, depending on the conditions. Finish with a well earned beer/coffee/wine at one of the little bars at the far end, or just sit on the sea wall of Sagues Park with the multitude of locals and watch the sunset.</image:caption>

<image:title>top tips - Best coffee in San Sebastián - When I say coffee, I mean speciality coffee. High scoring stuff with a known provenance and maybe a good story. I work in importing coffee from Peruvian communities, so this is important to me.</image:title>
<image:caption>The cafes in this list are all places that serve and stock excellent coffee, have well trained baristas and where you can sit and while away some time. Although there are more independent cafes in Spain than anywhere else in Europe, the speciality coffee scene is very small, there only being one speciality roastery in the entire city. You can get a reasonable cafe-con-leche anywhere in town but if you give a sh*t about the quality of the coffee you drink, pop into one of the places below. They’re properly rad.</image:caption>

<image:title>top tips - Best coffee in San Sebastián - 3. Old Town</image:title>
<image:caption>location (Centro) This is the cafe that’s linked to the only roastery in town, so you’ll also see Old Town coffee being sold in other cafes too. The owner is my friend Riccardo, who’s mostly in the roastery on the edge of town, but ensures that all the coffee is ethically sourced and the crew in the cafe are super friendly and professional. It’s got a hipster vibe with fairly basic, rustic interior but Joao, the manager, is great, as is Aida, one of the baristas; either being happy to deep dive into coffee chat or shoot the breeze about anything else. Food is fantastic too; the best avocado-on-toast in town.</image:caption>

<image:title>top tips - Best coffee in San Sebastián - 4. Driper</image:title>
<image:caption>location (Gros) A beautifully designed speciality coffee shop owned and run by Jhon from Colombia, a chef from one of the nearby Michelin-starred joints. Expect a retro-meets-hipster vibe, a marvellous selection of espresso, pour overs and cold brews, and, obviously, an exceptional brunch menu. Like all the listed cafes, there is a good selection of coffee beans to buy, but this is where Driper and Mariana (the lead barista) really stand out - they have an amazing range of differently processed coffee, from washed to honey-processed to natural to anaerobic and all sorts in between. You'll definitely find something to interest you. I’m currently working on a bag from Ethiopia, which I’m loving. Be mindful though, they close early, at 3pm.</image:caption>

<image:title>top tips - Best coffee in San Sebastián - 2. Somos</image:title>
<image:caption>location (Antiguo) A really beautiful little spot with some inside seating but mostly a sidewalk-style cafe. They make sure they always have a good range of coffee from around the world; I had a great Ugandan brew when I was there last. The baristas are charming and knowledgable (Matti and Paola were lovely), good food is made to order, and the grey-themed design is consistent all the way down the painted stones weighing down the napkins.</image:caption>

<image:title>top tips - Best coffee in San Sebastián - 1. Simona</image:title>
<image:caption>location (Gros) My favourite. Hands down. For a few reasons. First, they have a good selection of coffees, serving methods and friendly, knowledgeable baristas. Secondly, great vibe and location. It’s stylish, spacious and edgy without being pretentious. There’s even a dedicated ‘laptop area’ for the digital nomad crew. It’s located on the west-facing riverside near La Zurriola beach so you can soak up the midday and afternoon sun with a flat white; rare in a place full of high-rise blocks. Thirdly, the food is exceptional. Try the Turkish Eggs. Good pastries too. Fourthly, it was set up by a group of four friends and there’s always one of them in, like Alexis, who’s awesome. They really care about coffee and cafe culture. It’s truly independent and they supports local and regional artisanal roasteries. Convinced? Go forth.</image:caption>

<image:title>top tips - Best coffee in San Sebastián - 5. Lurka</image:title>
<image:caption>location (Centro) Ok, this isn’t a proper speciality coffee spot, but it does serve great coffee. It is, however, a specialist cacao and chocolatery where they make a whole host of chocolatey goodies through the window you can look through while enjoying their wares. Classy, minimalist decor and amazing pastries. Pablo, the head pastry chef and chocolatier, came out with a taster when he saw us keenly watching the processing. Legend. Friendly and passionate. You’re obviously not going to find a better hot chocolate in town.</image:caption>

<image:title>top tips - Benny’s Secret Gipuzkoa - 5- The old village of Pasaia Donibane – a view into the ancient Basque maritime culture</image:title>
<image:caption>location The Basques are famed throughout Western Europe as able mariners and intrepid maritime explorers; they formed the backbone of the expedition that first circumnavigated the globe, led by Magellen. Pasaia Donibane, a picture-perfect waterfront settlement gives you a great feel for this, with some of its hodgepodge of buildings dating back to the 15th century. Located along at the mouth of a wonderful natural harbour, a stroll along the single street, amongst the cobbles and odd passageways, might lead you to the Palacio Villaviciosa (a magnificent Renaissance specimen) or the Casa Victor Hugo (a house/museum commemorating the stay of the renowned author) or even the side of an enormous ship leaving the docks for a destination unknown. Crossing the harbour from Pier Donibane on the regular little ferryboat service, you enter Pasaia San Pedro where you can find the wonders of the modern commercial port, as well as one of my favourite places in the whole Basque Country, The Albaola Ship Building Museum; an active traditional boat yard and training centre, showcasing some ancient restorations using old school Basque boat-building techniques.</image:caption>

<image:title>top tips - Benny’s Secret Gipuzkoa - 1. The Sanctuary of Loyola - the centre of Basque Christianity</image:title>
<image:caption>location If you’re more into sacred architecture and after something Vatican-like, head inland to the 18th century Baroque Basilica at the Sanctuary of Loyola in Azpeitia where, under the spectacular dome, you’ll find gold leaf and putti galore. Heralded as the birthplace of St Ignatius, this put the Basque Country on the map in terms of Christian history - St Ignatius founded the Jesuits in 1540; a group committed to renouncing worldly luxury and made famous by bringing Christianity to the remotest parts of the globe. The Sanctuary is made up of a complex of buildings, including St Ignatius’ ancient family home, a modern spiritual centre which offers numerous retreats, and an incredible records library. Go smell the old books, explore the epicentre of Basque Christian pilgrimage, but be mindful that you can only enter some of the Sanctuary areas by booking in advance.</image:caption>

<image:title>top tips - Benny’s Secret Gipuzkoa - 3. Zarautz – the perfect surf town</image:title>
<image:caption>location I still holiday here every year with gang of surfing friends from the UK, though I travel a much shorter distance than they do nowadays. We’re a motley crew of beginners and intermediate surfers and the chilled vibe in Zarautz is just ideal. With a long, high quality beach break that affords some protection from stronger westerly swells, there’s almost always something for everyone, wave wise (See more in my Basque Surf Guide). The water is clean and there’s a promenade that runs the length of the beach where you’ll find volleyball courts and a skate bowl. Beachside showers that function year round, an enormous array of accommodation options within walking distance of the surf (including the hilltop campsite), loads of bars and restaurants and quite a number of surf shops and surf schools, make it very easy to curate an ‘eat-sleep-surf’ vacation. Particular favourites are the super delicious pinxos from the bar at the Karlos Arguiñano Hotel and enjoying a cafe cortado at the Borghetto Cafe (Kantina), where from the terraces of both you can enjoy watching the lovely A-frame waves being surfed really close by, around high tide.</image:caption>

<image:title>top tips - Benny’s Secret Gipuzkoa - 4- The Petritegi Cider House – a place for feasting, Basque-style</image:title>
<image:caption>location Located in the hills behind Zarautz and Donostia-San Sebastian, this place takes you back in time. Seated on long wooden benches and tables among the massive cider casks, drinking the frankly scrumptious in-house cider and being brought plate after plate of steaming hill-raised local steak, you could be forgiven for thinking you’d stepped through a time warp into some legend of King Arthur. It’s not what I’d call an ideal vegan or vegetarian destination, but if you want to treat yourself to an amazing medieval banquet, this is the place. They offer a bunch of different tour experiences of their cider-making facilities as well as tasting sessions which are all super fun. Just don’t leave without a 6-pack of their ‘La Petri’ bottled cider. It’s cheap and it’s sooo good.</image:caption>

<image:title>top tips - Benny’s Secret Gipuzkoa</image:title>
<image:caption>Gipuzkoa is the NE province of ‘El Pais Vasco’ and although being the smallest, is the heartland of some of the richest cultural and natural heritage in the whole region. You can find anything from highland games to vast cathedrals to wildly beautiful rock formations (google the ‘Flysch’!) to the most beautiful city in the world… Donosti (aka San Sebastian). The latter is obviously what draws most people here, but definitely consider getting out of town for a bit if you want to really see under the skin of the Basque Country. Here are five of my favourite ‘off the beaten track’ places, in no particular order.</image:caption>

<image:title>top tips - Benny’s Secret Gipuzkoa - 2. Ibaieder Reservoir – a wonderful place for stroll in the forest</image:title>
<image:caption>location Not far from Azpeitia you can find the Embalse (reservoir) de Ibaieder. Although not spectacular, I love this little gem as it gives me a taste of the deeper mountainous zones while only being a short hop from the coast. It genuinely feels a bit different. With a beautiful 2 hour loop to walk, you can take in the smells and sounds of the old forest, picnic next to the tranquillity of the still waters and look down over the impressive presence of the dam itself. Although I don’t think it’s permitted, I sometimes take a calming dip in one of the many quiet corners. Just getting there down the country roads gives you a much better view of what Basque farming and rural life looks like. You’ll hear a lot of barking hunting dogs in their kennels.</image:caption>

<image:title>top tips - Big Basque Highlights - 2. Pinxo tours in either of the ‘old towns’</image:title>
<image:caption>In San Sebastián’s Old Town, La Parte Vieja, you’ll experience the authentic charm of the Basque Country. Narrow streets, historic buildings, and of course, the famous pinxos bars where you can try delicious Basque bites like txangurro (stuffed crab) and bacalao al pil-pil (cod in garlic and olive oil sauce). I love the crab soup at Bar Sport where the owner makes a point of remembering your name, and I always get a racion of the incredicble morcilla (basque blood sausage) at La Cuchara de San Telmo where everything on the menu is genuinely exceptional. You’ll find a similar network of winding streets and bars in El Casco Viejo in Bilbao. Fancy doing a pinxos tour with a proper local guide? <image:title>top tips - Big Basque Highlights - 3. Casco Viejo in Bilbao</image:title>
<image:caption>Bilbao’s historic heart, the Casco Viejo, is a maze of charming streets filled with characterful buildings, cozy pintxos bars, and unique boutiques. The art-deco food market and incredible neo-baroque Arriaga theatre are on the verges and definitely worth a stroll around. The area is full of energy year round. Tip: arrive just before Spanish dinner time, meaning before 8 PM. And as tempting as it may be to order everything at one bar, the real fun is in hopping from one spot to another, trying a different pinxo at each stop. Patience, and you’ll get to try ‘em all!</image:caption>

<image:title>top tips - Benny’s Secret Bizkaia - 4- Picasso’s Guernica - a town steeped in stories</image:title>
<image:caption>location A little to the south of Urdaibai, you find Guernica, a fairly ugly town in the heartland of the Basque Country that holds a special, if tragic, place in Basque history. During the Spanish Civil War of the 1930’s, Franco’s fascist forces were supported by Hitler’s Luftwaffe. The German air force, as a ‘dry run’ for the coming global conflict, used Guernica to observe the effect of bombing civilian rather than military targets. The result was a terrible atrocity that Picasso captured in his large scale painting called ‘Guernica’. There’s a large mural of it in the town. Go and see it. It’s heavy but worth it, particularly seeing it in situ. What the town lacks in beauty, it more than makes up for with sheer gravity. Guernica is also the site of the Tree of Guernica, the remnants of an ancient oak tree under which the Basque rulers have met and sworn fidelity for centuries. More gravity.</image:caption>

<image:title>top tips - Benny’s Secret Bizkaia - 5- Gaztelugatxeko – a real life Game of Thrones castle</image:title>
<image:caption>location You don’t have to have seen Game of Thrones to appreciate The San Juan Hermitage, whose Basque name I can’t even start to pronounce. The jagging, raised causeway that runs across the rocks to join the island to the mainland is iconic and will immediately transport fans to Dragonstone and the Targaryens. It’s a remarkable sight, let alone an experience to cross with the often raging sea on both sides. The 9th century hermitage, as is fitting, is very modest indeed and definitely not a castle, so it’s really the wild ruggedness that draws people here. Feel the wind in your hair, the salt on your skin, and maybe the whispers of Daenerys on the wind.</image:caption>

<image:title>top tips - Benny’s Secret Bizkaia</image:title>
<image:caption>Bizkaia is a large region in the NW of the Basque Country and is the home of the modern and ancient Basque capitals of Bilbao and Guernica. These recommendations are for those who want to leave the cosmopolitan metropolis of Bilbao behind and sample something a little different. Just put on some more rugged footwear and go find fishing boat regattas, pristine sandy beaches, old mining towns and extraordinary estuaries.</image:caption>

<image:title>top tips - Benny’s Secret Bizkaia - 1. Lekeitio - my favourite Basque town</image:title>
<image:caption>location Along the wild Atlantic coast of Spain you can unsurprisingly find a vast number of beautiful little fishing villages and towns. But what is somewhat surprising, unlike many of their other European counterparts, is that these coastal settlements still have small but active fishing fleets. Lekeitio is one of these, nestled along the mountainous coastline away from the main Basque highway route. Where Basque whalers used set out centuries before, now the odd local fishing crew head off into the deep dark blue waters, returning with all sorts of bounty from the sea. Sitting at one of the harbourside cafes and watching the boats come in is a beautiful way to pass a morning. The reason Lekeitio is a particular favourite of mine is that, in the afternoon you might then walk out along the strange tidal causeway to the small forested island which lies just offshore, explore the woods and rocks for a bit, before returning to the beach and cooling down with a dip in the crystal clear water of Karraspio beach. Hanging out with the smiling Lekeitio locals always reminds me that it’s just a good place to be.</image:caption>

<image:title>top tips - Benny’s Secret Bizkaia - 2. Cima Ogono - a wild hill climb</image:title>
<image:caption>location Accessed from the car park located above Elantxobe (“Eh-lan-cho-beh”), there are a few marked trails leading you around this wild mountain, ideal for short walks of up to an hour. A mixture of the cursed eucalyptus (I’ll tell you more about these some other time...) and glorious native forest, you’ll definitely come across wild boar tracks if not the creatures themselves, and feel like you’re pressing deeper and deeper into some kind of wild enchantment. The final part of the climb is a rock-to-rock scramble through montane scrub to a quite spectacular view of the coastline and estuary below you. There are some odd stainless steel boxes mounted up here. If you find out their function, let me know. Also, keep an eye out for local walkers - Basque folk love hiking and you want to make sure you don’t miss the opportunity to say ‘aupa’ (“ow-pa” literally means ‘wow’, but used for ‘hi’) or ‘agur’ (“a-guur” = goodbye)</image:caption>
</image:image>

<image:title>top tips - Benny’s Secret Bizkaia - 3. Urdaibai Bird Centre - an extraordinary biosphere reserve</image:title>
<image:caption>location This is quite niche but I truly believe there’s no better way to regularly connect with the marvels of nature than to get some binoculars and watch the birds. Their colours, movements, variation and majesty can bring a deep peace, and they’re found everywhere. The bird hides at Urdaibai are positioned around the brackish lagoons and reed beds of the upper estuary and as well as seeing a host of waders (storks, egrets, sandpipers etc.), you’ll see kingfishers and woodpeckers among many others, and may even get the opportunity of watching the rare and weird looking spoonbill sifting for invertebrates or maybe an osprey on the hunt. If this isn’t your cup of tea and you need a bit more vicarious excitement, you could head a bit north to the estuary mouth where, if you’re lucky and the world famous wave at Mundaka is working, you’ll have a grandstand view of the surfers trying their luck on the breakers barrelling over the sandbars. If you do surf and are keen, be mindful of quite a territorial local crew.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The Atlantic Ocean plays a big role in San Sebastián’s weather. In summer, it keeps the city refreshingly cool, but it can also bring sudden mist or rain. In winter, the ocean keeps temperatures mild. Always check a weather app, as conditions can change quickly! Our favorite app? El Tiempo.</image:caption>

<image:title>top tips - Rainy days tips - 2. What to wear?</image:title>
<image:caption>The weather in the Basque Country can be unpredictable, even in summer. Always pack the following: Layers, layers, layers… Warm in the sun, cool in the shade. One moment it’s sunny, the next you might get caught in a quick rain shower. That’s the Basque Country! A jacket or sweater for the evenings An umbrella – Especially in the winter months, locals always carry a one just in case. Comfortable shoes – The towns and cities have many cobbled streets, and without realising it, you’ll end up walking a lot. A beret - if you want to fit in. It’s part of the original basque uniform.</image:caption>

<image:title>top tips - Rainy days tips - 1. What’s the weather like in the Basque Country?</image:title>
<image:caption>The Basque Country has a temperate oceanic climate, meaning it’s rarely extremely hot or freezing cold. It’s similar to the UK, N France or the Low Countries, except 5 degrees warmer at all points. A big difference is that the summers seem longer and sunnier, running from May to October. July and August are the warmest months (25-28 degrees) with proper elongated periods of clear blue skies, but also the busiest. Dec/Jan/Feb are the genuinely wintery months (10-14 degrees) where hats and coats are in order.</image:caption>

<image:title>top tips - Rainy days tips - 5- Visit the Basque Country in spring or autumn</image:title>
<image:caption>Although summer is the most popular travel season, the Basque Country is, in my opinion, at it’s best in the spring or autumn. Apart from the obvious natural beauty of springtime blooms and autumnal colours, it has a lot to offer outside the peak season: Fewer tourists - you can enjoy the city at your own pace; Spectacular waves at La Zurriola - perfect for surfers and photographers; Lively, outdoor culture - the locals always meet up out on the terraces of squares to drink and socialise. Going round to your mate’s house isn’t much of a thing. Cheaper hotel and restaurant prices – Off season prices drop significantly. Pro: You can hire bikes next to the hotel. In 8 minutes, you will be in the Old Town. Con: The area it’s located in, Amara, is a series of high rise blocks from the 1960s - 1980s. <image:caption>location ($ cheap) Although the name won’t exactly attract gourmands, the constant crowd spilling out onto the Calle Fermin Calbeton speaks for itself. The popularity obviously creates a wonderfully buzzy vibe, but despite the busyness, the bar staff remember your name, smile readily and serve you fantastic, reasonably priced pinxos. <image:title>top tips - Best pinxos in San Sebastián - 4- Bar Antonio</image:title>
<image:caption>location ($ cheap) If the quality of a Spanish tortilla is your benchmark of gastronomic excellence, as it is for me, Bar Antonio is the best place in town, signed locally as ‘Antonio Bar’. It’s run by my friend and upstairs neighbour Jose, and is a classic street corner bar a few blocks south into the more central zone. Their famous tortilla is the perfect blend of a gently crisped outside with a soft centre (need to go early in the day before it runs out). Although it’s ultimately just potato and egg, it’s genuinely worth the foray out of the alleys of La Parte Vieja and you’ll definitely get the opportunity to practice your Euskera (the Basque language) with the locals at the bar.</image:caption>

<image:title>top tips - Best pinxos in San Sebastián - 2. Taberna Gandarias</image:title>
<image:caption>location ($$ moderate) If you want Jamon Iberico, this is the place. They really know their black label from their red, green and white… With a spectacular wine selection, it would definitely be classed as a high-end restaurant. Despite this well-to-do, white table cloth appearance, they manage to create a welcoming ambience and a spacious bar side area for the wandering pinxo tourist. Having quite a few tables outside helps as well.</image:caption>

<image:title>top tips - Best pinxos in San Sebastián - 1. La Cuchara de San Telmo</image:title>
<image:caption>location ($$ moderate) Tucked away by the Church of San Telmo, this is an exceptional little spot. It’s famous and super busy for a reason. With a made-to-order only menu, their pinxos are genuinely exquisite. A taste of their sautéed foie gras, the morcilla or the goats cheese are in themselves worth your whole trip to Donosti. Also, if you have a glass of the muscato, you may never want to drink anything else. The efficient and friendly staff navigate through the crowded corridor bar with aplomb and you get the impression they’re proud to work there. Danny and Jessica always remember customers and are just wonderful people. Triple thumbs up from me.</image:caption>

<image:title>top tips - Best pinxos in San Sebastián - Pinxos = Tapas</image:title>
<image:caption>Donostia-San Sebastian is probably the most prestigious pinxos town of them all, with a culinary culture boasting more 3 star Michelin establishments than anywhere else in the country. It’s a big deal. I also happen to live here and the pinxo bar scene was a big influence in my decision to move here in the first place. There are loads of great pinxo bars around but here are my five absolute favourites in La Parte Vieja (The Old Town) where you can happily explore all of them on foot. Notes: 1) This is the most ‘touristy’ spot in the whole city so it will regularly be full of tourists and it’s hard to find genuinely culturally Basque places. See here for my fave local spots; 2) Don’t be fooled by the bars with massive selections on show… they look cool but they’re pre-prepared and so can’t be that fresh… The best places tend to have only a few things on display and make the rest to order; 3) If you don’t fancy scrummaging or waiting a while for a space, avoid weekends, or try and go before or after the evening rush (7-10pm).</image:caption>
